Each week, I have published an in-depth view of a certain subject - but I have found that the ‘Photo of the Week’ feature has become over-long and has diverted my efforts.
Once I have selected a photo/subject, both my curiosity and conscience demand a broad study be carried out. Whilst it has been rewarding to gain deeper knowledge of the varied subjects, each separate piece has taken much longer than initially imagined. I have been spending 20-30hrs a week researching and writing a piece that takes 20-30 minutes to read.
The original intention was to spend a few hours preparing a piece that would take a few minutes to read, and then I would have time to edit and publish the serialisation of my longer material.
Throughout the dark winter months and early-spring weeks, it was easy enough to devote this time to ‘hibernating’ in my ‘lonely garret’, but now that summer is here, there are things to do - garden and DIY jobs - and hills to hike. There are also new features to write on rugby and cricket
Consequently, for now, at least until the nights draw in again, I will be abbreviating PotW. There will still be one a week - of interesting subjects I hope - but I shall reduce the volume and also rely on other peoples’ material.
The first PotW in this format will be published on 5th June.
